The Opuntia ficus-indica or the Nopal plant is a prolific succulent cactus coming from Mexico. For around 5000 years, nopal has been consumed for its many nutritional qualities and medicinal functions. The plant has traditionally been used for its salutary effects on atherosclerosis, diabetes and gastric problems.
Today, that plant is still very much consumed, in the form of the fruit, the jam or the alcoholic drink.
